Quick Answers to Common Inquiries

Here are the most common questions about GridSquare Legal, our services, and how we operate. If you need further assistance, feel free to contact us directly.

GridSquare Legal differentiates itself by blending operational planning and briefing with legal analysis. The firm's founder is a former Marine officer and IRS Tax Attorney, and he leverages this unique experience to deliver fast, methodical, and strategic legal advice

If you are a mover, a decision-maker, and an entrepreneur who is keen on producing economic value, you are someone who values loyalty and integrity over the biggest and oldest law firm. You need an advisor who can help you build a ship to help it sail smoothly through your industry's legal waters.

The firm's approach is to provide "best value" instead of maximizing billable hours. The firm's customers value fixed firm fees and/or reduced billable hours facilitated through this philosophy. This commitment is rooted in the firm's sense of mission and loyalty to the client.

We guide immigrant founders, cross-border businesses, and startups through complex business law terrain. Core competencies include business & corporate transactions, tax strategy & controversy, labor/NLRB compliance, government contracting, business immigration, and estate planning for business owners. When a matter requires it, we coordinate with vetted specialist counsel.

  • Founders, owners, and venture-backed or bootstrapped startups with ongoing legal needs
  • Immigrant entrepreneurs and cross-border operators (U.S.–Korea and beyond)
  • Federal/DoD, state, and local vendors needing compliant contracts and bid support
  • Real-estate and other investors building or restructuring entities
  • Families and professionals seeking business-aware estate planning
  • Single point of strategic accountability — clients don’t juggle multiple law firms, retainers, or advisors. They work through a single lead counsel who aligns tax, corporate, immigration, and specialist inputs into a coherent cross-border strategy so execution stays aligned and efficient.
  • Operational planning, not paper pushing.  Phased roadmaps, milestones, clear communications, next actions
  • Experienced judgment (IRS, NLRB, DoD contracting, litigation, and private practice)
  • Veteran-led ethos; disciplined preparation; clear recommendations (not just options)
  • Multilingual: Korean · Japanese · Spanish; cross-cultural fluency
  • Value-first pricing: fixed fees, monthly counsel subscriptions, and not-to-exceed caps
  • Entity formation & governance (optimal structure, bylaws/operating & shareholder agreements)
  • Contracts (NDAs, MSAs/SOWs, licensing, vendor & partnership agreements, commercial leases)
  • Employment & labor compliance (handbooks/Section 7, policy reviews, ULP response, election guidance)
  • Regulatory compliance & risk audits with practical frameworks
  • Corporate housekeeping (calendars, minute-book, resolutions)
  • Government contracts (RFP strategy, FAR/subpart compliance, vendor eligibility)
  • Bid protests/award defense, REAs and claims (GAO, SBA OHA, state/local)
  • Coordination with specialists when litigation or a niche expertise is required
  • Yes, for planning and coordination: choice of entity, founder equity/83(b), QSBS, deal structuring input, audit correspondence, and practical compliance.
  • For tax controversy (Appeals/Tax Court) or complex planning (closely held and cross-border), we scope a separate engagement and work alongside your CPA as needed.
  • We coordinate business immigration strategy for E-2 and L-1 matters through trusted immigration counsel as part of a broader cross-border legal framework.
  • GridSquare Legal does not serve as immigration counsel of record and does not prepare or file immigration petitions. Immigration legal advice and filings are provided by licensed immigration counsel, with whom we coordinate as part of an integrated cross-border strategy.
  • Yes. We advise founders, families, and business owners on foundational estate planning, including trust-based planning, asset alignment, and succession considerations.

  • For complex or multinational planning, including pre-immigration structuring or business succession across jurisdictions, we coordinate with specialist foreign counsel as part of a broader cross-border legal strategy.

  • Advanced estate and international planning strategies may be implemented directly or in coordination with specialist counsel, depending on complexity and jurisdiction to ensure accuracy and risk management.

To maximum extent, we provide best value through fixed fees, monthly counsel subscriptions, and not-to-exceed hourly caps. Scope and timelines are set up front.

We are California-based (serving San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, and statewide) with cross-border matters coordinated globally.  We maintain a dedicated private office in San Diego (Kearny Mesa). Clients are welcome to schedule an in-person consultation; we’re glad to meet face-to-face by appointment.

When the mission calls for it. We remain your point of contact and lead the strategy—bringing in trusted specialists (e.g., IP litigation, advanced Estate Planning/immigration) to execute efficiently.  In select matters, we may assist long-standing clients with strategic preparation for mediation or alternative dispute resolution in coordination with litigation counsel.

Please Book a 30-minute intro call, outline goals and timelines, and we’ll propose scope, milestones, and pricing. We guide. You advance.
